The AEC’s primary focus is to raise funds to provide bursaries for quality education for disadvantaged children living in Alexandra. With the funds raised we are able to sponsor 230 children and pay for their school fees, transport, school uniforms, text books, stationery and the necessary IT devices, such as laptops and tablets. Essentially, the bursary allows the child to focus on their studies and achieve excellent results. We are proud to say that our bursars have achieved close to a 100% pass rate since 1996!

Saturday School

All AEC bursars, from Grade 8 to Matric, attend extra lessons each Saturday in the gateway subjects: English, Maths, and Physical Science. Recently we have added computer coding to the programme.

For the Grade 7 learners coming from primary schools in Alexandra we are also running a Saturday School programme designed to help and prepare them for high school.

Holiday Programmes

During the state school holidays, we run intensive academic support days.  The focus here is on Grades 10-12. Our bursars are given additional extra lessons in English, Mathematics and Physical Science.  In addition, the children are holistically stimulated with cultural and sports events.

Maths and English teacher development workshops

To enhance and improve the learning experience for the children, we regularly conduct teacher development workshops in Maths and English for 19 primary school teachers in and around Alexandra. To measure the success of these workshops as well as the impact these programs have on the learners in the community the AEC sets a series of tests for the actual grade 6 learners under these teachers over the past 3 years the results from these tests have improved 10% year on year.
