Class of 1999 – AEC’s First Matric Class 20 Years On

We honour those who were the pioneers of the AEC, those who matriculated 20 years ago.

Twenty-five years ago, some talented scholars were given a huge opportunity by the AEC to embark on a five-year high school journey at Nest Phuthing (Summit College), and they probably had no idea what to expect from a multi-racial high school such as this one. One can only imagine what a challenge it must have been to blend and interact with other races for the first time, but Summit College had a unique culture that made one easily adapt and feel at home. Soon it made everyone realise that it didn’t matter where you came from, you would always shine like the star that you are.

We have often hear: “Grade 12 goes by fast!” And it really does! 1999. One last year. What a year! Finally completed matric! The first AEC Matriculants!

Class of 1999, Mr Yates would be awfully proud of you because you have carried the fire on with you to date.  It is a great honour to celebrate your achievements with you this year.

Hlengiwe Langa
Hlengiwe Langa
Hlengiwe Langa to this day feels indebted to Mr Deane Yates and Dot; she stresses that this was the greatest opportunity given at the most desperate time of her life as the family came from Natal to Joburg with no place to stay. She recalls squatting at the Roman Catholic Church in Alexandra. The Church provided food and accommodation to her and her family. As luck would have it, Mr Yates spotted her academic talent and the AEC funded her. Hlengiwe has been constantly working hard and overcame her challenges. Her lucky break was when she got a job at FNB after matric; she self- funded her studies and moved to Discovery in 2007 as a call centre agent, climbed the corporate ladder and now works for Discovery Bank as a Credit Analyst. She has a degree in Finance and Financial Management with UNISA and is currently doing her Honours with Regent Business school.
